How to Measure for Your Blinds & Hardware
Things to Remember
Inside Mounting
- Allows you to mount the shade inside the window casing so that the headrail sits back into the window casing
- Emphasizes the actual size of the window, and allows trim work to be visible
- Requires a minimum depth clearance to mount inside the frame, note your depth clearance before purchasing
Outside Mounting
- Allows you to mount the headrail above the window casing or on molding
- Gives the illusion of a longer and wider window and can make a narrow window look larger
- May be necessary if the window is not deep enough to contain at least the shade or blind mounting brackets
General
- Measure window accurately and remember that all windows are not perfectly square.
- For custom ordered product, you will need to order your blind or shade specifically as an inside mount or outside mount.
Measuring for Blinds
Inside-Mounted Horizontal Blinds
- Measure the exact distance between the inside surfaces of the window frame at the top, middle and bottom, and use the narrowest width.
- Do not make any width deductions. The factory will make the necessary deductions.
- Measure the height of the window from the top of the opening to the sill in 3 places. Use the longest dimension for the blind height.
Outside-Mounted Horizontal Blinds
- To find the width, measure the outside width of the window frame. Add at least 3 inches for overlap (1-1/2" per side).
- To find the height, measure from the sill to the position of the top of the shade. If there is no sill, measure to where the blind is to reach.
Inside-Mounted Vertical Blinds
- Measure the exact distance between the inside surfaces of the window frame at the top, middle and bottom, and use the narrowest width. The factory will automatically deduct 1/4-inch for clearance.
- Measure the height of the window from the top of the opening to the sill in 3 places. Use the smallest dimension for the blind height. The factory will automatically deduct 1/8 inch.
Outside-Mounted Vertical Blinds
- To find your Outside Mount measurements, measure the exact width of the door or window. A minimum overlap of 4 inches on each side is recommended. Outside mount projection brackets are recommended for patio doors with projecting handles.
Measuring for Hardware
- Measure the width of your window treatments, taking into account if you want to mount hardware on the wall or directly on the window trim.
- Allow 1 1/2" - 3" on each side of the window for when the drapes are completely open.
- Be sure to consider extra wall space needed for decorative finials, as the rod dimensions do not include additional width added by each finial.
- To make the windows appear larger, mount the curtain rod 6" above the trim and allow the rod width to extend 3" beyond the window's actual width.
